Learn moreOur story
A Columbus Ave-based crew running 10 to 40 yard roll-off containers across Pittsfield and ten surrounding Berkshire County towns.

Pateman & Sons Dumpster Rentals runs out of a yard at 260 Columbus Ave in Pittsfield, Massachusetts, in the valley where the Housatonic River's east and west branches meet, between the Berkshire Hills and the Taconic Range. It is a small, family-named operation — the trucks say "Pateman & Sons" because that is who is behind them — sized to run one yard well rather than a fleet across half the state.
Pittsfield itself carries real literary and cultural weight for a city its size: Herman Melville wrote Moby-Dick at Arrowhead, his farmhouse a few miles from downtown, and Tanglewood, the Boston Symphony Orchestra's summer home, sits just down the road in neighboring Lenox — one of the ten towns on our own service list. None of that changes how a roll-off container gets sized or delivered, but it is the place this business actually works in, not a generic service-area backdrop.
We have run out of the Columbus Ave yard for several years, long enough to know which Pittsfield streets are tight, which Berkshire County driveways slope hard toward the road come mud season, and which of the ten surrounding towns are a quick run and which take real time to reach. That is the kind of knowledge that does not show up on a website — it shows up in a driver who does not need directions.
By the numbers
Figures are indicative of our current operation.
Every call into Pateman & Sons Dumpster Rentals is answered by someone who works out of the same Columbus Ave yard as the trucks — not an answering service two states away reading from a script. Whoever picks up the phone can tell you whether a job in downtown Pittsfield needs a permit for the street or can sit entirely on your driveway, and whether a delivery out toward Hancock or Stockbridge is realistically a same-day run or a next-day one.
That matters more here than it might elsewhere, because Pittsfield and its ten neighboring Berkshire towns are not interchangeable. A container that is straightforward to place on a wide Pittsfield lot can be a tighter fit on a shared driveway in Lenox or a steep grade outside Richmond, and a team that actually drives those roads is what keeps a quoted delivery window honest instead of hopeful.
The container lineup runs from a 10 yard box, small enough for a garage cleanout or a single-room tear-out, up to a 40 yard unit sized for new construction or a full demolition. The honest answer to "what size do I need" almost always comes down to one thing: is the load dense — concrete, brick, roofing shingles, wet plaster — which hits its weight allowance long before it fills the box, or is it bulky and light — furniture, drywall, general household debris — which fills the box long before it gets heavy.
We would rather size a job right on the first call than have a customer pay an overage charge on a container that filled faster than expected, or rent a 30 yard box that sits half empty. Once a load leaves the property, clean metal, concrete and yard debris get routed for recovery rather than the landfill where the local facilities allow it — good practice on its own, and required outright for several material categories under Massachusetts's own statewide waste disposal bans.
Pittsfield is a city with its own mayor and city council, and its own Public Works & Engineering Division handles permits for anything placed in a public street or right-of-way. The ten towns we also serve — Lanesborough, Dalton, Washington, Lenox, Richmond, Hancock, Hinsdale, Cheshire, Adams and Stockbridge — are each a genuine, independent Massachusetts town, run by its own elected Select Board, not a branch office of Pittsfield.
There is no Berkshire County permits desk to fall back on for any of them — Massachusetts abolished most of its county governments, including Berkshire's, starting in the 1990s. A container kept entirely on a private driveway typically needs no permit anywhere on our list; it is street or right-of-way placement that changes the answer, and which office to call changes with it. We tell you which one applies to your address before you book, not after.
Pateman & Sons Dumpster Rentals carries general liability coverage and commercial auto coverage on the trucks that make deliveries and pickups, and we are glad to send proof of insurance to a property manager, general contractor or builder who needs one on file before a container hits their site.
Pittsfield sits in a real New England snow belt — a humid continental climate, roughly 73 inches of snow in an average year, and stretches of single-digit or sub-zero cold most winters. We size containers for the two jobs that follow a bad nor'easter: clearing the storm debris right after it hits, and the spring cleanout that follows once the snow finally clears.
What we stand on
We would rather size a job right the first time than sell a bigger box or leave you eating an overage fee later.
Pittsfield's city permit process and ten independent towns' own Select Board offices — we know which applies before we deliver.
(413) 553-1676 reaches the same small team that schedules the truck, not a national dispatch center.
General liability and commercial auto coverage, with proof of insurance available for property managers and contractors.
Clean metal, concrete and yard debris get routed for recovery, in line with Massachusetts's own statewide waste-ban rules.

Yes. The yard is at 260 Columbus Ave in Pittsfield, Massachusetts, and the team that answers the phone, books the route and drives the truck all works out of that same yard — there is no out-of-state dispatch center in the loop.
We would rather not put an invented number on this page. What we can tell you honestly is that the team has run out of the Columbus Ave yard for several years — long enough to know which Pittsfield streets are tight and which of the ten surrounding towns take real time to reach.
Yes. We carry general liability coverage and commercial auto coverage on the delivery trucks, and can provide proof of insurance to a property manager, general contractor or builder who needs documentation on file before a container arrives.
Eleven communities total: Pittsfield itself, plus the real Berkshire County towns of Lanesborough, Dalton, Washington, Lenox, Richmond, Hancock, Hinsdale, Cheshire, Adams and Stockbridge — each its own full town government with its own elected Select Board.
A driver working out of the Columbus Ave yard handles both the delivery and the pickup in person — the same small crew that answers the phone is the crew that shows up at your property, not a subcontracted third party.
